A last minute change of venue meant we were playing Forgeside at Garndiffaith RFC on a cold damp morning in North Gwent.
The team warmed up well and the boys really took ownership of it for themselves, which really pleased the coaches. The good warm up worked because after a few minutes the Young Saints broke down the Forgeside defence to open the scoring through Caleb Higgs-Collier, who stepped his man to make his way to the try line.
Again, the defensive structure was good, with boys recognising when the ball was lost and fanning out to defend, and there was some good tackles put in by Camron Phillips in particular. This defence carried the team to another clean sheet - only the second of the season.
Also impressive in this performance was the shape of the attack. The Young Saints scored 8 tries and 6 of these came from the backs and 5 from the wing. While the wingers must be applauded for finishing the tries, the forwards must also be recognised for not only winning the contact and ball, but also getting out of the way of the 9-10 channel to allow the ball to go wide. Liam Luckett was particularly good at recognising when to commit to a ruck and when to support the ball going wide. The scrum also went well again, lead ably by Keiron Addis, who is becoming more vocal and aggresive with every game - keep it up!
With the boys putting the pressure on, the game did become a bit niggly (which is to be expected at this age group), and the boys stuck together well and looked after each team mate. The boys enjoyed the game and the win with a celebratory sing song in the changing rooms after the game,
We welcome Bedwas RFC at the Glebelands next Sunday!
