Improving Saints Fall to Defeat

It was a defeat for Saint Julians in their fifteenth game of the season on a overcast day at the Glebelands, but there were plenty of bright parts which the coaches and players could reflect on at the final whistle.

Following the Chepstow game, training was focussed on rucking technique and ensuring players had the correct technnique to ensure the team secured ball at the breakdown. This clearly paid off as the Young Saints did not lose one of their own rucks and actually turned over two of Fairwaters in a display which would have pleased the ("tired") onlooking coaches.

It was actually the Saint Julian's side who started the brighter, keeping possession and spending time in the oppositions half. However, this spell of pressure was broken when one strong run and a missed one up tackle allowed Fairwater to score their first try from their own half. It was a theme throughout the game, Saint Julians keeping ball for multi phases only to lose possession and concede from a missed tackle - needless to say the focus for next Saturday's session has already been set! The side from the Blues region led four tries to nil at half time.

The second half started much like the first, with Saint Julians again spending time in the opposition's 22 and going through phases. However, on this occasion they were able to convert pressure into points and after working the ball into space and Mitchell Watkin's hands, the winger beat a number of players on his way to the line for the Young Saint's opener.

Fairwater responded quickly with another two tries from their own half which again came from missed tackles, but the Saints continued to battle and crossed the line in the final minute through debutant and man of the match winner Tristan Pyatt. The winger had a fantstic debut, not only crossing for his first try for Saints but also making 4 tackles and missing none. Well done that man.

Cian Knight was also in good form, making trademark tackles and strong at the rucks. The scrum, led by the front row trio of Kane Grosvenor, Liam Luckett and Kieran Addis also enjoyed the upper hand against their opposite numbers.

Plenty to be pleased with for the team as they head into an exciting fixture against Croesyceiliog next Sunday in the Dragons cup!
