Saints Much Improved in Battle of the Bog

The Young Saints' performance was much improved at a wet and windy Waunfawr Park, despite being on the wrong side of the scoreline against a very quick and skillful Risca outfit.

The emphasis going into the game was on the performance and in particular the coaches wanted to see strong ball carrying and rucking, which would lead to ball retention and opportunities to score tries. Saint Julians delivered on all three points with every player getting their hands on the ball and carrying hard at the opposition. It was great to see Dylan "Eric the Viking" Lewis take possession of the ball on the halfway and end up 15m in the opposition's half with three opponents hanging off him, and Kieran Addis joining him with a good carry of his own. Consequently, the Young Saint's ball retention was very good, conceding few turnovers at the breakdown and even stealing some of the opposition's ball as a result of some strong counter rucking from Kane Grosvenor and Liam Luckett.

Shorn of no less than 5 backs due to illness and holidays, Saint Julians battled manfully to defend against a Risca backline which had lightning pace, but on a full size pitch and with 9 forwards playing, tries inevitably came despite the team's best defensive efforts, which were epitomised by some excellent last ditch tackles from Riley Hayward and Blaide Howells.

The Young Saints got two tries of their own, which was no more than they deserved for their efforts. The first coming from Kane Grosvenor with a carry from a tapped penalty 5 yards out (which no doubt by now has become a 20 metre run in with a chip and catch to boot!). The second came from Iwan Pitman who spotted a gap on the blindside and pinned his ears back to (just about) make it to the tryline after swatting away a last ditch tackler with a trade mark handoff.

The half term week means that Wednesday's training session will now be ditched in favour of a team bonding day, 11-3 over the Glebelands. The boys will play rugby, baseball and football and it will be a fun run around ahead of "proper" training on Saturday.
