Saints Bounce Back With Win At Local Rivals

The Young Saints put the disappointment of last week's performance behind them to bounce back with a hard earned victory at fellow Newport club Whiteheads RFC.

Outscoring their opponents six tries to three, the Saints played with a fiery determination which ultimately carried them to their first ever win over the Steelers. From the start of the day, one could tell that the Young Saints were fired up for the match, with the warm up being conducted with a steely focus and plenty of physicality. Despite this, it was actually the Steelers who took the lead with the first try of the game despite the best efforts of second row, Josh Morris, to hold up the player over the line.

The Saints responded with two quick fire tries, one an intercept from Joseph Lee and the other a superb solo run from outside centre Riley Hayward, who collected a kick from just inside his own half and beat several defenders on his run to the line (think John Bentley 97 Lions tour for those old enough to remember).

The first half was an even affair, with the breakdown extremely competitive and turnovers being won by both sides. The home side scored a second try to bring the game level, before the Young Saints built pressure in the opposition 22 and Hooker Liam Luckett dotted down after a 40 (divided by 20) yard run to the line. This score put the Young Saints into the lead as the half time whistle blew.

The second half saw the Young Saints increase the physiciality of their play. Strong, direct running from the whole pack and Tay Smith in particular, saw the team punch holes in the opposition defence, which brought second tries for Riley Hayward and Joseph Lee, and Caleb Higgs-Hollier, who had a fine game defensively, burned four defenders for pace on the outside to make his way to the line.

The Saints did not have it all their own way, and spent long spells defending, which they did with an aggression and cohesion not seen so far this season. The structure and communication, in addition to the tackle technique, was particularly pleasing for the coaches.

Despite this good defence, the Steelers did add to their tally with a well worked try in the final minutes, but the Saints held on for a well earned win.
