With our scheduled fixture postponed, we were in the pool for our eagerly anticipated first match of the season and ended up travelling to Pencoed RFC to kick off the season.
It was an early start for our team and it clearly showed as Saint Julians were slow out of the blocks, which allowed Pencoed to run in three tries in a good opening half for the home team. Despite this, some facets of play from the Young Saints was very good. The scrum, in particular, was extremely strong. So strong that our hosts requested to go passive at half time, which negated one of our key strengths in the game. Credit for this must go to Dylan "Erik the Viking" Lewis for his strong performance on the day. The coaching staff were pleased to see the work done on the scrummaging machine, and on profile and tecnique, paying off in a game. It bodes well for the season ahead.
After a stern team talk at half time, the team were far more combative after the break, getting up into the opposition's faces quickly and not letting them run at pace. This led to good spells of possession, and a few darting runs around the base from Riley Hayward resulted in him going under the posts for a well deserved try.
However, Pencoed rallied and through the excellent skills of their outside half, scored a further two tries to put the game to bed and send Saints back up the M4 with plenty to work on to go with some positives from the game.
