Saints March on to Dragons Plate Quarter Final

Saint Julian's u12s played some fantastic rugby in a tough and fraught cup match to progress through to the quarter final of the Dragon's plate competition.

It was a real team effort, both on and off the field, which made the win even sweeter. Parents arrived early to help the coaches set the pitch up, conduct "poop patrols", and help in the kitchen, and the players delivered a performance in teamwork and togetherness which brought a smile to those watching.

It was actually the away team who started stronger. Their strong ball carrier making his way to the line for the opening score of the game. There was a feeling that this may set the tone for the day, but the Young Saints rallied, taking control of the next ten minutes and scoring three tries which were almost carbon copies of each other in terms of approach. Players identified spaces out wide and, using basic draw and pass techniques, were able to work players into space. Unsurprisingly, the try scorers were all from the Saints' back three, with Camron Philips, Trystan Pyatt and Mitchell Watkins all crossing for scores.

Forgeside scored again shortly after to keep the pressure on the home side, but you felt that if Saint Julian's could keep the ball for more than one phase, they would find space out wide and score tries.  This proved to be the case as just before half time home skipper, Joseph Lee, dabbed down for Saint Julian's fourth try of the game following another multi-phase period of play. The first half ended 24-12 to the Young Saints.

The coaches message to the players at half time was to keep the ball and continue playing in the same manner. However, Forgeside were the first to score in the second half; a converted try following a long run from their inside centre to make the score 24-19.

The Saints needed another score, and they duly delivered with a try which really showed what the team is about and just how much they have improved since the beginning of the season. It started with a win against the head at a Forgeside scrum thanks to some fantastic scrummaging from the pack, and in particular Dylan Lewis, whose side of the scrum went forward allowing the turnover. The back row then tidied up the ball with a short carry to set up a ruck. Ethan Griffiths, in his first game at scrum half, recognised the need for quick ball and moved the ball to Joseph Lee, who passed to Tay Smith, who then passed out to Myles Duggan on the wing. Myles used good footwork and set the ball up with a nice long present, and Caleb Higgs-Hollier, recognising he was the nearest man, secured the ball. Riley Hayward was the next to arrive and, recognising the need for quick ball, picked and ran at the defence, fixing two defenders before slipping the ball to Joseph Lee, who also drew a man and released to Liam Luckett. Luckett realised there was an overlap, drew his man and threw a left handed pass to fellow front rower, Kane Grosvenor, who beat three men on his way to the line for one of the best team tries of the season. The score was converted and it was 31-19 with minutes to play.

Forgeside came back again with another converted score through their strong runner to make it 31-26 and they almost snatched a victory at the death through the same runner had it not been for Joseph Lee, who was inspired in defence, with a last ditch tackle which effectively secured the team's place in the quarter finals.

The coaches were delighted with the performance of every player and the team overall. They felt that the fact the team scored 5 tries by 5 different players demonstrates the type of rugby they are trying to develop and are pleased how the boys are responding. The skills on show were superb and this did not go unnoticed by members of the club's senior section who were in attendance to support and who commented on how good the boys skills were. We are sure they are lookin forward to them making the step up to the senior team in 6-7 years time!

Again, a big thank you to everyone; players, parents, grandparents, siblings, pets and supporters for making it a day on which we could proud of the club we are a part of. Onto Caerphilly in the quarters now - see you there!
