Fixture

The team played at the Croesyceiliog tournament which involved teams from Gwent and further afield. Each game lasted 20 minutes in total and the Young Saints played four of them; two of them against leading teams in the region Caerleon RFC and Pontypool RFC. The coaches felt that this would be an excellent opportunity to get further game time under the belt to help the boys development, and they were ecstatic at the commitment and hear that each and every player showed, not to mention watching them put into practice what they work so hard on in training. This writer was definetly a fan (out!).

The results were as follows:-

Caerleon RFC 25 - 5 St Julians RFC

Croesyceiliog RFC 10 - 10 St Julians RFC

St Julians RFC 0 - 30 Pontypool RFC

St Julians RFC 40 - 0 Cwmbran RFC

Despite the scoreline, the performances against Caerleon and Pontypool were particularly pleasing because of the way the team defended, keeping their shape and making it very hard for the opposition to score tries. In both games there was only one try in it at half time and both Caerleon and Pontpool, who have very good backlines, were forced into throwing wild passes to get around our defence and became frustrated. Ultimately, the Young Saints faded in both games as the opposition brought fresh legs on, but it truly was a gallant effort. To put the result in perspective, both teams scored more tries against us in the games last season.

All of the squad were excellent, but Calen Higgs was brilliant throughtout the day with his tackling and Keiron Addis went 60 metres for a try. Oh, and the boys got to meet Dragons stars Ashton Hewitt and Lewis Evans, so all in all, in good day!
