On a bright, cold morning at Y Gwynddy school Saint Julians U12s put on probably their best attacking display of the season, scoring six fantastic tries despite eventually losing an end to end affair to a good Bedwas outfit.
The Saints struck straight from the kick off, with wing and joint top scorer Mitchell Watkins running in from halfway to open the Saints account.
The reverse fixture at the Glebelands was a closely contested affair, and this game was no different as Bedwas took control of the ten minutes following the opening try, scoring three tries in quick succession courtesy of some strong running from their number 8 and second row coupled with some suspect first up tackling from the Young Saints.
It looked like it might turn into a rout, but then the Young Saints struck back with a good try from skipper Joseph Lee to breath some life into the visitors before the end of the first half.
The second half saw Saint Julians dominate with some excellent rucking and multi phase play resulting in tries for Iwan Pitman, Shay Bushe and two more for Joseph Lee. Quite instrumental in much of Saints play were loose forwards Cian Knight and Blaide Howells, with the latter turning in a man of the match disiplay with some excellent carrying, rucking and counter rucking.
Despite being positive in attack, the Young Saints still continued to miss first up tackles, which meant that their opponents scored 6 tries of their own of which 5 were converted resulting in them taking the victory.
Overall, it was a pleasing display in a fantastic game of rugby played in the right spirit which leads the team well into the Plate quarter final next week.
